Sixteen-year-old Mark Milotay opened Ottawa’s spring tennis calendar with a commanding 6–1, 6–3 victory, breaking serve in the opening game with two deep backhand returns and never allowing his opponent to settle into rhythm. Milotay raced to a 5–0 lead in the first set by pinning rallies to the corners, then closed the match with an ace out wide after saving break point in the final game. “He looked sharp from the first ball,” said tournament organizer Paul Drennan. “He came out playing with confidence and control.”
