A closer contest followed, but Milotay held firm for a 7–5, 6–4 victory after twice trailing by a break in the opening set. He broke back at 3–5 with a series of looping returns that pushed his opponent behind the baseline, then won four straight games to take the set and carried that momentum into the second, where he converted his only break chance at 4–4. “He doesn’t need many openings,” said the opposing player afterward. “He makes the most of the ones he gets.”
