In the semifinal, Milotay rallied for a 2–6, 6–3, 6–2 victory after being thoroughly outplayed in the opening set by an opponent who struck flat winners off both wings. Milotay changed the direction of the match by stepping farther back on return, making more serves playable, and then extending rallies until errors began to come. “That was a very smart adjustment,” said tournament director Nancy Ellison. “He didn’t try to hit through the problem; he solved it.”
